What is a Gynecomastia Reduction?
Gynecomastia is a condition in which tissue in the male chest enlarge causing a more feminine appearance. There are many causes of gynecomastia, and this condition can present in males of all ages. In some cases once the causative agent is removed, gynecomastia resolves without surgical intervention. In other cases surgery is needed to recreate a more masculine chest. The procedure can involve liposuction alone or removal of skin and fatty tissue depending on the severity of the condition.
What to Expect:
The procedure is performed in the operating room under general anesthesia. Liposuction or direct excision is performed to remove excess fatty and glandular tissue. The duration of the procedure is 1-2 hours.
A compression garment is worn for 4-6 weeks. Swelling can persist for several months. Nipple sensitivity or changes in sensation are common in the initial post-operative period but will gradually improve with time. Heavy lifting and strenuous physical activity should be avoided for 4-6 weeks.
