What is a Breast Reduction?
Over sensitivity of hormone receptors in the breasts during puberty can cause the breast tissue to grow at an exaggerated rate. This can lead to large, heavy breasts that over time can cause chronic neck and back pain, grooving of the bra straps on the shoulders and recurrent rashes in the lower fold of the breast. A breast reduction procedure reduces the size of the breast to attempt to alleviate these symptoms and create a more aesthetically pleasing breast.
What to Expect:
The procedure is performed in the operating room under general anesthesia. Redundant skin and excess breast tissue are removed, elevating the nipple areolar complex and contouring the breast. The duration of the procedure is 4 hours.
The breasts are wrapped with a soft bandage immediately after surgery. The bandage is maintained until day 3. After day 3 a surgical bra or sports bra can be worn for 3-4 weeks.
